SQL: the language for data management
Everywhere you look, you will find data: from social media to web searches. From your car to your robot vacuum cleaner. SQL is the language you need to learn if you work with data management.
Today's post explains to you what SQL is and its uses. But let's start from the beginning.
What is SQL?
SQL stands for Structured Query Language, and it's the name of a standardized programming language that communicates with databases.
So, if you work with data management, you have to know SQL. According to Stack Overflow's survey, this is the third most used language among professional developers.
There are hundreds of programming languages, most specifically 700. Unlike numerous others, SQL is a domain-specific language.
Designed for managing data in a relational database management system (RDBMS), SQL it's also applied to stream processing in a relational data stream management system (RDSMS).
Despite its narrow uses, database administrators, developers writing data integration scripts, and data analysts use SQL regularly.
Statements
To retrieve data, SQL queries and other operations take the form of keywords called statements.
Statements like "Select" help you pinpoint data sets that meet your search requirements.
Commands like INSERT, DELETE, UPDATE, or CREATE DATABASE are also very useful when working with SQL. Here are some statements descriptions:
INSERT - Creates a record with new information.
DELETE - Deletes existing records.
UPDATE-Modifies one or more records.
CREATE DATABASE - Creates a new table, a view of a table, or another object in the database
SQL in data management
Using the above and other English-like statements, SQL allows you to query the database in several ways.
Generally, SQL is used on websites for backend data storage and data processing solutions.
SQL is the most commonly used database language. Therefore, almost any company that needs to store relational data can use this language.
Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp are some of the companies that use SQL for backend data storage and data processing solutions.
Music apps like Spotify or banking apps like Revolut also use SQL.
In this blog post, we have summered what SQL is and how it works.
As stated at the beginning of this post, SQL is a must-have skill for any data analytics or data science professional.
