The date was created by the Portuguese Digital Economy Association (ACEPI) and aims to promote e-commerce in Portugal for 24 hours. This initiative is part of Portugal Digital Week'19, an event organized by ACEPI every year since 2003.

Portugal Digital Week 2019 takes place from October 21 to 25 and aims to encourage the implementation of Digital Transformation in Portugal. Several brands regularly participate in Online Shopping Day, not to be confused with Black Friday or Cyber Monday.
